This article analyses the online community known as tankies, focusing on their discussions and ideological leanings. By utilizing named entity recognition, the study assesses how tankies engage with various political figures and nations, particularly China's connection to their views. The research also explores community detection, user migration patterns, and content topics, presenting evidence that tankies exhibit distinct narratives around geopolitics, with significant emphasis on the U.S. and its foreign policy. The findings contribute to understanding the broader far-left discourse in online platforms.
Our analysis of tankies reveals that their primary focus is on ideologies connected to China and a distinct engagement with American politics, particularly critical of U.S. interventions.
Through community detection methods, we were able to visualize not only the growth of tankie communities over time but also significant user migrations across these platforms.
The misalignment analysis uncovers the contrasting narratives present in tankie discussions, illustrating their unique perceptions of current geopolitical events, especially concerning Russia and Ukraine.
By examining named entities, we were able to extract meaningful insights into tankies' discussions, with a notable emphasis on key figures and nations significant to their ideology.
