"Daigle says Cassidy was right to convict Trump, though he acknowledges that the senator has not always explained that vote well to voters. Still he worries about what the president is doing to the party. "Conservatism is about ideas and principles, and they always make it about Trump," Daigle says. "What are you going to do when he's no longer in the picture?" But for some primary voters, Trump is still very much in the picture."
Bill Cassidy is running for reelection as one of the few Republican senators who voted to convict President Trump after January 6. Most of the other senators who voted to convict have retired, leaving Cassidy’s campaign as a measure of Trump’s grip on the party and voter preferences in Washington. Cassidy faces two primary challengers, including one endorsed by Trump, creating a contest between a veteran lawmaker and a millennial MAGA loyalist. Some Louisiana Republicans view Cassidy’s conviction vote as betrayal and expect his political career to end. Others support Cassidy’s decision to convict while criticizing how well he communicated it. Still, many voters prioritize Trump’s role and endorsements.
