Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz by firing on ships after U.S. and Israeli bombing began on February 28, disrupting 20% of global crude oil supply and causing oil prices to surge. Trump administration officials had warned the president that Iran might close the strait if attacked. Trump has requested allied assistance to reopen the strait or escort tankers, but received no commitments. Iran has also bombed oil facilities and U.S. bases while Israel invaded Lebanon. Sen. Husted attributed Iran's current military capabilities to failures by Biden and Obama administrations, claiming their policies enabled Iran to develop nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles, and the capacity to control the strait.
