Several Republican lawmakers known for controversial statements regarding Jews are set to question university presidents about antisemitism. Faculty at Haverford College have submitted a memo highlighting concerns over the credibility of legislators like Rep. Tim Walberg, linked to conversion efforts towards Jews, and Rep. Mark Harris, who suggested peace is only possible with conversion to Christianity. The faculty fears retaliation for their stance. The hearing follows contentious exchanges in prior committee meetings, prompting concern amidst rising antisemitic incidents that legislators have not addressed.
In a memo shared exclusively with the Guardian, the faculty at Haverford have questioned the credibility of several members of the committee, raising serious concerns about their past statements and actions.
Representative Mark Harris of North Carolina, it notes, once said that until Jews and Muslims accept Jesus Christ there'll never be peace in their soul or peace in their city.
Committee member Mary Miller of Illinois, quoted Hitler in a speech outside the US Capitol, stating that he was right on one thing when he said that whoever has the youth has the future.
