Colombia is on high alert after a series of coordinated attacks in its southwest, resulting in at least four deaths and multiple injuries. Authorities attribute these attacks to the FARC-EMC rebel group, which has been active in the region. This violence follows closely on the heels of an assassination attempt against conservative presidential hopeful Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay. The recent bombings, involving car bombs and gunfire targeting police stations, have exacerbated the country's already tense political climate as it marks significant anniversaries related to the FARC's tumultuous past.
The bombings came just days after the attempted assassination of presidential hopeful Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay at a campaign rally in the capital Bogota, allegedly by a 15-year-old hitman.
These coordinated attacks have left at least four people dead and injured twelve others, targeting police stations and municipal buildings with various forms of explosives and gunfire.
Carlos Fernando Triana, head of police, stated, 'It was not immediately clear who was behind the attacks, but military and police spokespeople blamed the strikes on the FARC-EMC.'
The attacks may be linked to the third anniversary of the killing of FARC dissident leader Leider Johani Noscue, also known as Mayimbu, heightening national tensions.
