Mateo Perez Rueda was one internship short of a political science degree and supported himself through bicycle delivery and selling fruit salads and juice. He traveled to Briceno in Antioquia on 4 May to report on the conflict involving the army, paramilitaries, and Farc dissidents. After he stopped responding to his parents, relatives and friends pressed authorities for information for three days. A humanitarian mission confirmed he was kidnapped, tortured, and killed by the 36th Front. His death became a symbol of political violence at its highest level in a decade, central to the presidential election between Gustavo Petro’s backed candidate Ivan Cepeda and far-right challenger Abelardo de la Espriella.
