"destroyed every way I could become a functioning adult"
"ruined every chance of making friends"
"When I'm there I feel kind of safe but not safe"
"it used to hurt so badly I couldn't explain it"
A woman pleaded not guilty to two counts of cruelty to children under section 246 (1)(2) of the Children Act, 2001, for assaults alleged between August 1, 2012 and December 19, 2017. She was convicted and given three months on both counts, fully suspended for two years, and subsequently appealed. Specialist garda interviews from 2018 recorded a younger child saying they felt "kind of safe but not safe," describing being "hit, very hard," struck on backs, hands and mouth, and having bottles thrown at them. A victim impact statement said the behaviour destroyed the child's ability to function and make friends.
