A $4.6 million settlement resolved a lawsuit arising from serial sexual abuse by former youth coach Kevin Whitmer against a San Jose Jr. Sharks player. Whitmer pleaded no contest to a dozen counts of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14 and a count of possessing images or videos of a minor, and faces an expected 25-year prison term under a plea agreement with sentencing tentatively scheduled for February. The lawsuit alleged Sharks Sports & Entertainment and Sharks Ice failed to enforce USA Hockey chaperone rules, allowed unauthorized locker room access, and ignored complaints of inappropriate contact. The abuse allegedly began in 2021 when the victim was 12 and escalated to repeated sexual acts and image exchanges.
