NYPD lied about moped crash caught on video, lawsuit says
"The police don't have the authority, or should not have the power, to use their vehicles as weapons,"
"If somebody is violating a minor law, they are entitled to be ticketed. They are entitled to be called to account. They're not entitled to be collided with and crushed,"
"I was horrified that a member of the NYPD felt entitled to act in such a manner,"
"They know what they were doing was wrong and that's why they lied about it,"
Delonny Davis, a Bronx moped operator, suffered partial hearing loss after an unmarked NYPD vehicle struck his moped in August 2023 and sent him into the vehicle window. The legal filing says officers deliberately veered into the bike lane and used the vehicle as a weapon, then produced a criminal complaint stating the moped crashed into the police vehicle. Attorneys acknowledged the moped lacked a license plate and briefly traveled the wrong way in a one-way bike lane, but argued those infractions did not justify the collision. Surveillance video provided by Davis's counsel appears to show the police car initiating the impact. The NYPD says the incident is under review and that disciplinary processes are ongoing.
