"The defendant, who is the applicant, is charged with the most serious and the most notorious terrorist attack this country has ever seen. The outpouring of public grief, public outrage, and public anger at what he and his father allegedly did are unprecedented, extraordinary and absolutely understandable. However, there is no suggestion that the defendant's mother, brother or sister had anything to do with it."
"Wilson said they couldn't afford to move and the police are saying the family had nothing to do with it [the mass shooting]. A Downing Centre local court magistrate last week granted Akram's mother, brother and sister an interim suppression banning the publication of their names and addresses to protect their mental and physical safety."
The legal team for Naveed Akram, accused in the December 14 Bondi beach mass shooting that killed 15 people, requested permanent suppression of his mother's, brother's, and sister's names and addresses. They cited death threats and concerns for the family's safety, noting the family cannot afford to relocate and police confirm they had no involvement in the attack. Media organizations challenged the suppression order, arguing insufficient evidence of imminent danger exists. A magistrate previously granted interim suppression. Akram, 24, faces 59 charges including 15 murder counts and one terrorist act charge. His father, Sajid Akram, was killed by police at the scene.
