Ian Wilkinson, a pastor, forgave Erin Patterson for attempting to murder him but said he could not forgive her for killing three relatives with poisoned beef wellingtons. Patterson was convicted of murdering Heather Wilkinson, 66, Don Patterson, 70, and Gail Patterson, 70, and of the attempted murder of Ian after the 2023 lunch. Ian said he had not fully recovered from death cap mushroom poisoning and described the emotional devastation of losing his wife of 44 years, sister-in-law and brother-in-law. He offered forgiveness for the attempt on his life but sought justice for the murders. Twenty-eight victim impact statements were tendered ahead of sentencing.
I make an offer of forgiveness to Erin, he told the court. In regards to the murders of Heather and Gail and Don, I am compelled to seek justice. Now I am no longer Erin Patterson's victim, and she has become the victim of my kindness. Wilkinson said he bore Patterson no ill will and his prayer for her was that she would use her time in custody to reform.
Wilkinson, a pastor whose wife, sister-in-law and brother-in-law were killed by Patterson after they were served the lunch in 2023, told the supreme court in Melbourne on Monday that he had not fully recovered from the death cap mushroom poisoning he suffered.
