Meta settles bellwether Kentucky case, ending first school-district trial over youth mental health

Meta settled the Breathitt County School District lawsuit that had been scheduled for trial on June 12 in Oakland. The settlement fully resolves the case brought in eastern Kentucky and follows similar settlements by YouTube, Snap, and TikTok earlier in the week. Financial terms were not disclosed. Breathitt had sought more than $60 million to fund a 15-year mental-health program. The case was selected as a bellwether from roughly 1,200 similar school-district suits and sits within MDL 3047, which consolidates more than 2,000 social-media addiction claims against major platforms. Bellwether outcomes guide pricing for subsequent cases, and settlement prevents a public jury verdict from anchoring negotiations. Prior jury findings in California and New Mexico have already assigned liability and damages in related personal-injury claims.
