Met Police officer sacked for not disclosing arrest and gun possession probe
"Met Police Commander Katie Lilburn, who chaired the hearing, said PC Bhatti, also known as Oz, more likely than not read the form correctly and deliberately concealed information, according to an outcome report. She wrote: PC Bhatti lacked candour and lacked honesty and that in omitting such detail he deliberately sought to conceal information for his own personal gain and to avoid potentially negative repercussions in relation to his vetting clearance."
"PC Mohammad Bhatti said he had misunderstood the wording of the vetting form in 2020 and didn't remember being arrested after crashing his car into a railing in August 2008. In 2020, PC Bhatti ticked no to ever being arrested or investigated, on the police vetting form. On August 12, 2008, the former officer was arrested and investigated by Sussex Police on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle with excess alcohol but was quickly de-arrested that same day."
"Between October 2011 and August 2012, he was investigated by Sussex and Manchester Constabularies for alleged possession of firearms offences. Sussex Police raided his home in June 2012 following a tip-off from PC Bhatti's ex-partner who claimed the officer had threatened her with two pistols. Officers found two imitation firearms, a BB gun and a gas-fired gun. PC Bhatti said the firearms were considered legal at the time and had been bottomed out. He also claimed his ex-partner's allegations had been maliciously made and were untrue."
A Metropolitan Police officer was dismissed without notice for gross misconduct and barred from policing after failing to disclose past arrests and a firearms investigation on a vetting form. The officer said he misunderstood the vetting wording in 2020 and did not recall an August 2008 arrest following a crash into a railing. Sussex Police arrested and then de-arrested him that day on suspicion of drink-driving. Between 2011 and 2012 he was investigated by Sussex and Manchester over alleged firearm possession; a 2012 raid found imitation firearms. He claimed the weapons were legal and allegations were malicious.
