Lawsuit probes federal role in ICE-tracking app takedowns
"We're filing this lawsuit to find out just what the government told tech companies,"
"Getting these records will be critical to determining whether federal officials crossed the line into unconstitutional coercion and censorship of protected speech."
EFF filed a lawsuit against the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security seeking communications with Apple, Google, and Meta about removal of ICE-tracking apps and websites. The group previously submitted Freedom of Information Act requests to DoJ, DHS, ICE, and CBP and received only a CBP response, which closed the request for insufficient specificity. EFF appealed the CBP decision and received no reply. The lawsuit demands disclosure of all relevant records and cites potential First Amendment violations. Apple, Google, and Meta removed apps and sites used to notify communities about ICE agent locations.
