Firms are pivoting toward associates with more experience, new report says
In 2025, 49% of associate hires came from other firms and 38% came directly from law school, based on data tracking 4,000 firms. This shifted from the prior two years when 46% of associate hires were recent law school graduates. Total associate hiring fell by about 5% compared with 2024. Graduates from top schools accepted jobs at boutique firms at twice the 2021 rate. Associates also found more opportunities in the Sun Belt region, covering the southern and southwestern United States.
