Thomas Partey, a Ghana international, joined Villarreal after his contract with Arsenal expired. Shortly after his departure, he faced five rape charges and one sexual assault charge, which he denies. He was granted conditional bail with restrictions on contacting the alleged victims. Villarreal acknowledged the legal proceedings involving Partey and reaffirmed their commitment to the principle of presumption of innocence. The club condemned all forms of violence, including gender-based violence, and noted that nearly 1,000 supporters protested against Partey's signing. Partey is scheduled to appear in court soon.
Under the conditions of the bail, Partey must not contact any of the three women and must notify police of any permanent changes of address or international travel.
Villarreal's statement added that it wishes to clearly reiterate its strong commitment to respect and diversity and firmly condemns any act of violence in all its forms, including gender-based violence.
