D.C. "sandwich guy" found not guilty of assaulting officer
"That night I believe I was protecting the rights of immigrants,"
"I would like to thank family and friends and strangers for all of their support, whether it was emotional or spiritual or artistic or financial,"
"To the people that opened their hearts and homes to me, I am eternally grateful, and I am so happy that justice prevails in spite of everything happening,"
"However, law enforcement should never be subjected to assault, no matter how 'minor.'"
Dunn asserted that he believed he was protecting immigrants' rights during the incident and became known as "sandwich guy." Prosecutors had pushed for a felony assault charge, but a federal grand jury declined to indict him. Dunn, a U.S. Air Force veteran who deployed to Afghanistan, thanked family, friends and strangers for emotional, spiritual, artistic and financial support and expressed gratitude to those who opened their homes. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said the office accepts the jury's verdict but stressed that law enforcement should never be subjected to assault. Department of Justice representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
