Cork woman caught driving on provisional licence that had expired over 20 years ago
On November 7 on St Joseph's Road in Mallow, gardaí stopped 50-year-old Andrea Kenny, who had no valid licence, no NCT certificate displayed, and no valid insurance. The court was told her NCT situation was later rectified through solicitor Denis Lenihan. Her licence had expired in 2005 and she had never held a full licence, only a provisional licence at the time. She had no previous convictions, had insurance for her own vehicle, and needed to drive to work as a healthcare assistant. Judge Colm Roberts used discretion to avoid a driving ban, noting she was taking steps to learn to drive and complete her driving test. She received a €250 fine for no insurance and a €150 fine for driving without a licence, with time limits to pay, and the NCT and documentation charges were considered.
"“She hadn't had a licence for many years,” said Mr Lenihan, to which Judge Colm Roberts asked how many years exactly. “It expired in 2005,” Mr Lenihan said. “It was a provisional licence at the time when it was a provisional (it is now called a learner permit), she's never had a licence, per se.”"
