"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story."
"The 2m-plus fortune of a bachelor multimillionaire has become the subject of a High Court dispute, involving heir hunters, DNA testing, and an inquiry into his father's "romantic life". McDonald Noel, who emigrated from Trinidad to London in 1960, died a wealthy man in 2018 at 84. He left behind a gross estate valued at 2.7m, including a 1.5m Kensington home. With no children, no spouse and no will, his millions were destined for government coffers until heir hunters intervened. They located potential relatives across the UK and Caribbean, but a bitter disagreement has since erupted over who among them is a genuine blood relative of the deceased. Now, armed with the results of DNA tests, a High Court judge is being asked to carry out a rare legal "kin enquiry" and rule on who should inherit."
The Independent solicits donations to fund on-the-ground reporting across topics and maintains free access to its reporting rather than using paywalls. Donations support sending journalists to cover both sides of stories and to investigate major issues such as political PACs and reproductive rights documentaries. McDonald Noel emigrated from Trinidad to London in 1960 and died aged 84 in 2018 leaving a gross estate worth £2.7m, including a £1.5m Kensington home. He died intestate with no spouse or children, prompting heir hunters to locate potential relatives in the UK and Caribbean. DNA test results have produced disputes, and a High Court judge has been asked to carry out a kin enquiry to determine rightful inheritance.
