AG Bondi has 'conflict of interest' in seeking death penalty against Luigi Mangione, defense says
"NEW YORK -- Attorney General Pam Bondi has a "conflict of interest" that "provides yet another reason" why the death penalty should be stricken from the federal case against accused murderer Luigi Mangione, his attorneys argued in a new court filing. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to federal charges that accused him of stalking and murdering UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson and has been fighting the government's notice of intent to seek the death penalty if he's convicted."
"In an overnight court filing, defense attorneys accused Bondi of failing to disclose her work at the lobbying firm Ballard Partners, which "lists UnitedHealth Group as a regular client," and "that she personally financially profited from Ballard's lucrative relationship with UHG." The defense called it a conflict of interest that should have stopped Bondi from directing prosecutors to seek the death penalty."
"The Attorney General's past and present financial interest in Ballard Partners, which continues to lobby the government on behalf of UHG and UHC, implicates Mr. Mangione's due process rights because the very person empowered to seek his death has a financial stake in the case she is prosecuting,"
Defense attorneys assert Attorney General Pam Bondi failed to disclose her work at lobbying firm Ballard Partners, which lists UnitedHealth Group as a regular client and from which she personally profited. Luigi Mangione has pleaded not guilty to federal charges accusing him of stalking and murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and has contested the government's notice of intent to seek the death penalty. Defense lawyers argue Bondi's financial connection to UHG and Ballard Partners created a conflict that should have required recusal and that pursuing the death penalty violates Mangione's due process rights. The U.S. Attorney's Office is expected to respond.
