Daniel McGee, then 22 years old, was sentenced to more than 12 years in federal prison for a severe hate crime committed in July 2021. McGee used the dating app Grindr to target his victim, falsely claiming to be 18 and insisting they meet alone at the victim's apartment. Upon arrival, McGee brutally attacked the man with a tire thumper and attempted to gouge out his eyes, causing life-threatening injuries including severe head lacerations and missing scalp. Investigators discovered McGee had meticulously planned the assault over weeks, researching anti-gay material and violent videos, purchasing weapons online, and studying methods to dispose of a body. McGee claimed he believed demons would be present and wanted to eliminate the victim.
