This transgender boxer is fighting to save his mentor - and unlikely friend - from ICE captivity
""dread and doom""
""he was never sick, or even if he was sick, he would still come.""
""I was looking at the clock and just really distracted the whole day. I knew something was wrong,""
""The next day I went on this website where you can look up people to see if they've been detained by ICE, and that's where I found him.""
Nolan Hanson felt intense dread when trainer Talap Mamyrkanov did not show up for a shift at Gleason's Gym in March. Hanson knew Mamyrkanov rarely missed work and would arrange coverage if needed. Hanson searched an ICE detainee lookup site and discovered that Mamyrkanov had been detained. Hanson is a transgender man who moved to Brooklyn in 2014. Mamyrkanov is Central Asian and Muslim and arrived in 2019 as an asylum seeker fleeing religious and ethnic persecution in Russia. Both trainers bonded through boxing, with Mamyrkanov teaching a Soviet boxing style and being notably friendly and funny.
