The 2024 election year may have made LGBTQ+ mental health worse - LGBTQ Nation
"The Trevor Project is the leading LGBTQ+-centered suicide prevention and crisis intervention nonprofit in the United States. Their new study, Project SPARK (Studying Protective And RisK factors), is their first ever longitudinal study, meaning that it is set to collect data over years. "The Trevor Project's study found a huge increase in self-reporting for depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation between initial survey responses and one-year follow-ups. Project SPARK surveyed 1,689 LGBTQ+ youth aged 13 to 24 beginning September 2023 and produced an interim 12-month analysis. Self-reported anxiety increased from 57% to 68%, depressive symptoms rose from 48% to 54%, and suicidal ideation climbed from 41% to 47% between initial responses and one-year follow-ups. Trans, nonbinary, and gender-questioning participants experienced consistently higher rates of mental health challenges. Elevated stigma and hostile political rhetoric corresponded with increased risk factors. The research identifies protective factors that support wellbeing and will continue longitudinal tracking to assess outcomes over additional months.
