Matt and Ross Duffer defended Will Byers's coming out scene after it was review-bombed online. The fifth and final series released in three parts, with the finale premiering on New Year's Eve/New Year's Day. The penultimate episode, entitled "The Bridge", resolved key plotlines: Max escapes Vecna and the Party realises Vecna intends to merge the Abyss with the human world. Will Byers comes out to his mother and friends, explaining he is different despite shared interests, saying "...I just don't like girls." Will reveals a crush on Mike and opens up to prevent Vecna exploiting his secret. Friends and family respond with love and support.
