The University of Pennsylvania reversed its support for transgender swimmer Lia Thomas after political pressure, concluding a civil rights investigation and removing her competitive records. This decision reflects a larger debate concerning transgender athletes in sports, particularly after the NCAA modified policies regarding trans women. Simone Biles has publicly advocated for inclusivity, suggesting a separate category for transgender athletes to ensure their ability to compete. The idea of a designated third gender category poses a potential solution to mitigate the controversy surrounding trans participation in sports.
On Tuesday, the University of Pennsylvania caved to pressure from President Donald Trump, ending a Department of Education-led civil rights investigation into the school's rostering of transgender swimmer Lia Thomas on the women's team.
As an act of appeasement to the administration, Penn has wiped Thomas' competitive records and will issue apologies to its athletes 'disadvantaged' by her participation.
You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports.
At first glance, the concept of instituting a third box meant for trans and/or intersex athletes may not seem so bad. It offers a clear alternative to banning people altogether from competing in the sports they love.
