Semenya hits out at impact of Olympic ban on DSD athletes
"Genetic screening is not, and never has been, a way to protect girls and women in sports. To call it that is to mask a monster. Let's call this what it is: exclusion, just with a different name."
"The new IOC policy makes a rare exception for athletes with a diagnosis of Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (CAIS) or other rare differences/disorders in sex development (DSDs) who do not benefit from the anabolic and/or performance-enhancing effects of testosterone."
The IOC's new policy on female athletes primarily affects those with Differences in Sexual Development (DSD), rather than trans athletes. Laurel Hubbard, a trans athlete, did not succeed in the 2020 Olympics. Caster Semenya, a prominent DSD athlete, was unable to compete due to a policy requiring testosterone levels to be below a certain threshold. The new policy has reverted to SRY testing, which tests for the SRY gene. Semenya criticized the decision, calling it exclusionary and a disguise for discrimination against female athletes.
