Paxton stated that therapists must help children "overcome" gender dysphoria rather than affirm their gender identity. According to analysis, the opinion effectively requires mental health professionals to either refuse treatment to trans youth or engage in conversion therapy practices. Providers can no longer affirm trans children's identities, suggest out-of-state alternatives, or encourage parental acceptance without facing legal consequences.
