Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch made comments during a Sept. 22 WBZ News Radio interview, saying the clergy sexual abuse scandal "was mostly homosexual issues, not pedophilia." He acknowledged that many children were impacted and characterized pedophilia as attraction to ages younger than teenagers. He emphasized that abuse and pedophilia are wrong in any circumstance and criticized local media coverage for treating the church harshly compared with other institutions. Koch apologized for his "ill-thought remarks" directly to the city's gay community and schools at a School Committee meeting, said he was unprepared, tried to make a larger point about sexual abuse across society, and pledged to do better.
