Popular trans activist brutally beaten in the street: "This is what voting Republican makes happen" - LGBTQ Nation
A prominent trans activist and genomics expert in Chicago reported being violently attacked near their home after crossing paths with someone who recognized them. The attack occurred on the night of April 29, shortly after they held a trans rights event called Transquake. They had encouraged trans people worldwide to express trans joy safely in response to claims that trans joy could destroy everything. They proposed testing the claim scientifically by concentrating transness expressed on a single day. Transquake included an in-person Chicago event where they announced a new organization, Beyond X & Y, focused on defending trans rights using biomedical expertise and the idea that biology is nonbinary. They believed flyers and local publicity led to recognition by the attacker.
"Jey McCreight, a genomics expert who goes by Dr. Jey the Science They and wants to be the "next Bill Nye," told their Instagram followers that they "crossed paths with a transphobe" who happened to recognize them and immediately began to violently attack them."
"The assault happened on the night of April 29, only a few days after McCreight held a trans rights event called Transquake. McCreight called for trans people around the world to "express their trans joy, however they feel fit (and safe) to do so" as a response to the right-wing claim that trans joy "is actually powerful enough to destroy everything.""
"McCreight said the theory could be tested through scientific means. "By working together to concentrate the amount of transness expressed on earth to a single day, we can finally test the right's hypothesis that trans joy is too powerful," they wrote in their explanation of the day. "Will an earthquake open up a chasm under Mar-a-Lago? Will God strike down Dr. Jey with a bolt of lightning? Who knows!""
"Transquake also included an in-person event in Chicago, where McCreight announced their new organization, Beyond X & Y, a team of biomedical experts working to defend trans rights grounded in the scientific reality that "biology is nonbinary." McCreight said they had been advertising the event with flyers across the city that included their photo and had also appeared in the local LGBTQ+ publication, Windy City Times. They assume the event's publicity is how the attacker recognized them."
