Brazil's 2026 Carnival ran from Feb. 13 and wrapped up this weekend with large celebrations in Rio de Janeiro that drew city officials' estimates of six million partygoers. Progressive milestones have emerged in recent years, including Camila Prins becoming the first transgender woman to lead a top samba school's drum section in 2020 and trans dancers portraying Xica Manicongo. Porto da Pedra's parade honored sex workers to challenge stigma and demand compassion and respect for their work and lives.
