"For me, personally, coming down to Frank Ogawa Plaza, to the seat of government, and showing our pride and doing our best to highlight how special a place Oakland is,"
"With all the negativity about Oakland, we want to show that we live here, that it is a special place for LGBTQ pride, and that's what we're bringing."
Oakland Pride will take place Sunday, Sept. 7, themed "In Unity We Thrive," with a reversed parade route beginning at 22nd Street and Broadway and ending at Frank Ogawa Plaza, where festival gates open at 12 p.m. The location shift responds to construction on Thomas L. Berkley Way; Frank Ogawa Plaza previously hosted East Bay Pride from 1997 to 2004. Performers include Martha Wash, CeCe Peniston, Oakland rapper Kamaiyah, and Christian Chávez on the Latin stage. Celebrity marshals include Layshia Clarendon, Patrik-Ian Polk, and W. Kamau Bell. Organizers emphasize a returning dance stage celebrating disco, house, and queer nightlife, while noting sponsorship and financial challenges.
