Meet the Virginia gay bar owner who married his partner in front of 100,000 strangers
""We literally invited the entire world to our wedding," Lutz says."
""I wanted to make sure that we liked each other first," Lutz jokes."
""[One day], I turned to Johnny and I said, 'You know, I think we should get married. It is our right, and we need to claim it,'" he says."
""Every time we kissed on the parade, [the parade crowd] went crazy," Lutz says."
Freddie Lutz and Johnny Cervantes married during WorldPride 2025 in Washington, D.C., exchanging vows atop a Pride parade float on June 7 before thousands of attendees. Lutz owns Freddie's, a longtime "straight-friendly" gay bar in Arlington that has served as a community cornerstone and a haven for queer Pentagon employees. The couple, together for 28 years, delayed marriage due to guest-list and planning hassles but chose WorldPride amid concerns about anti-LGBTQ+ actions by the Trump administration and some Supreme Court justices. Virginia state Sen. Danica Roem officiated; the crowd cheered when the couple kissed. Safety concerns prevented including Lutz's grandniece and grandnephew.
