Terri Lesley, former director of the Campbell County Public Library, received a $700,000 settlement after dismissal in 2023 for refusing to remove books with LGBTQ+ themes and sexual-health information. Lesley agreed to drop her lawsuit against the county while a separate suit against three individuals who challenged the books remains active. The library board left the American Library Association and the Wyoming Library Association in 2022 and pledged to ban several titles, including This Book Is Gay, Gender Queer, How Do You Make a Baby, and Sex Is a Funny Word. Book bans increased nationwide, with an estimated 6,870 bans across 23 states affecting nearly 4,000 unique titles between 2024 and 2025. In August a federal judge partially struck down legislation banning certain books.
