LGBTQ+ fostering households on the rise in Wales
"There's a pressing need for more people to become foster carers and insufficient adoption applications. We want to encourage people to consider adoption or fostering as routes to building their family. LGBTQ+ people bring unique qualities which can be incredibly powerful in supporting children and young people to feel seen."
"We had no idea that we needed fostering in our lives. It started with friends asking us to be their foster support. At that point, we had no intention of being more than a spare pair of hands."
Wales is experiencing a significant rise in LGBTQ+ households engaged in fostering, with numbers nearly doubling from 30 to 56. Foster Wales Carmarthenshire accounts for 12.5% of these households in south-west Wales. Local officials emphasize the critical shortage of foster carers and adoption applications. LGBTQ+ individuals are recognized for bringing unique qualities that help children feel supported and seen. A local queer couple, Dee and Kaz Hamilton, began their fostering journey after initially supporting friends who were foster carers, eventually transitioning into formal fostering roles themselves.
