LGBTQ+ Catholic groups have shown cautious optimism towards Pope Robert Prevost (Pope Leo XIV) after his election, as they hope for a more inclusive leadership under his guidance. Prevost, who has a past of expressing anti-gay views, particularly in a 2012 statement where he criticized entertainment media for promoting the "homosexual lifestyle," is viewed as a centrist and a close associate of Pope Francis. While Francis had somewhat softened the Church's stance on LGBTQ+ issues, Prevost's previous remarks raise questions about his approach. The LGBT+ Catholics Westminster Pastoral Council expressed a desire for dialogue and inclusivity in his papacy.
Issuing a statement following his election, the LGBT+ Catholics Westminster Pastoral Council said they "warmly" welcome Pope Leo XIV and believe his speech from St. Peter's balcony "emphasised his commitment to build bridges, to dialogue and journey together, including everyone in the people of God."
Prevost was critical of entertainment media in 2012, saying it held "sympathy for beliefs and practices that are at odds with the gospel," including the "homosexual lifestyle" and "alternative families comprised of same-sex partners and their adopted children."
