Rick Garcia died on 12 January at the age of 69. He kept his sexual orientation private through high school and college and publicly challenged anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric as early as 1976. He participated in multiple LGBTQ+ rights groups and helped pass Chicago's LGBTQ+-inclusive Human Rights Ordinance in 1988 and Cook County protections in 1993. He co-founded the Illinois Federation for Human Rights in 1992, later renamed Equality Illinois, and advocated for a 2005 Illinois anti-discrimination law and marriage equality in 2013. He left Equality Illinois in 2012 and joined The Civil Rights Agenda. Colleagues remembered him as warm, witty, and fiercely committed to justice.
