'I'm a trans woman who transitioned as a teenager in the 70s'
Briefly

Marilyn Pieronek, a 63-year-old Canadian trans woman, transitioned socially at age 15 in 1977. Growing up in a conservative family made her journey tough. Accessing information about gender identity was difficult during that time. Upon moving to Vancouver to escape her home in Calgary, she found community among other trans youth. However, they faced harsh realities, including sex work and drug addiction to support themselves and fund gender affirming surgeries.
"I came from a sort of like a centre-right family, so it was very tough growing up."
"On the bus over to Vancouver, I remember asking the kids, 'so what do we do when we run out of money?'"
