Heated Rivalry follows two rising ice hockey stars, Shane and bisexual Russian Ilya, who begin an illicit romance. Hudson Williams, who plays Shane, said he has received messages from several professional athletes revealing they remain closeted. Brock McGillis, the first out gay professional hockey player, warned the series might reflect normalized homophobia while also helping people close to players better understand their relationships. The series gained attention for its passionate scenes.
