"Elon Musk's AI chatbot Grok claimed gender-affirming care for trans kids is "child abuse" shortly after the X owner and tech billionaire claimed doctors providing it 'mutilate' children. The AI-generated statement, and Musk's comments, came in response to a study published by University of Buckingham politics professor Eric Kaufmann, which stated the number of young Americans identifying as a trans or queer has declined."
"Kaufmann, who previously called anti-LGBTQ+ Florida governor Ron DeSantis the "future of conservatism" and labelled so-called 'woke ideas' the "a battle for the foundations of our civilisation", claimed the decrease is because "trans and queer are going out of fashion among young people" and that such identities are "declining in popularity with each new cohort". Despite high correlations between sexual/gender identity and political attitudes within individuals, theover-time trend in gender and sexuality seems relatively independent of political, cultural and religious beliefs."
""Improving mental health, however, appears to be part of the explanation for the decline of BTQ+ identification," Kaufmann claimed. "One possibility is that woke beliefs played a role in the emergence of BTQ+ identity and mental illness identification in the 2010s, but that these have since become substantially uncoupled, obeying their own distinct rhythms. Further work is needed to test this hypothesis.""
Elon Musk's AI chatbot Grok labelled gender-affirming care for trans kids "child abuse" shortly after Musk said doctors providing such care 'mutilate' children. Both statements followed a study by University of Buckingham professor Eric Kaufmann reporting a decline in young Americans identifying as trans or queer. FIRE and HERI figures showed trans youth at university fell from seven percent in 2023 to under four percent, and students identifying as not heterosexual dropped by about ten points. Kaufmann suggested changing fashions and improving mental health partly explain the decline and raised the possibility that 'woke beliefs' influenced earlier increases, while the analysis did not mention rising transphobic policies and social attitudes.
