Governor Maura Healey signed the updated Shield Act 2.0, which solidifies protections for reproductive and gender-affirming healthcare in Massachusetts, even against federal inquiries. The law prevents disclosure of personal information of healthcare providers. Massachusetts maintains legal abortion availability up to 24 weeks, with provisions for emergencies after that. Healey emphasized the state's strong reputation for healthcare, underscoring the importance of freedom and choice in health decisions for families, despite the national shift following the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
The act will prevent sensitive data, including the practising doctor's name, from being disclosed. The law will prohibit Massachusetts-based authorities from working with federal and out-of-state healthcare investigations, including abortions.
Healey expressed that this updated shield law is the strongest in America, aimed at safeguarding reproductive health care, gender-affirming care, and those who provide it.
