Gay senior police officer slams vile' ableist and homophobic attack on comedian Rosie Jones
"Thankfully, Lee knew how to report what was happening - using our text number 61016 - allowing us to send officers to meet them, make sure they got home safely, and launch an investigation into the offenders."
"This is the reality we're getting to now in this country. We were attacked by ableist and homophobic a*******s."
"I knew I couldn't be the only one - it just wasn't being reported. That experience has stayed with me and shaped how I lead today."
Comedian Rosie Jones, 35, and TV presenter Lee Peart were targeted on an October 5 train from Brighton to London Victoria when a group of three mocked their voices and threw wine at them. Jones has ataxic cerebral palsy. British Transport Police condemned the incident and pledged that hate-motivated abuse, intimidation and violence will not be tolerated. Peart used the BTP text reporting number 61016, which allowed officers to meet them, ensure they reached home safely and open an investigation. Peart posted images of red wine stains and described the attackers as ableist and homophobic. Chief Superintendent Chris Casey recounted past anti-gay abuse and concerns about being openly LGBTQ+ in policing, saying those experiences shaped his leadership.
