About 100 supporters gathered at the American Federation of Teachers headquarters in Washington, D.C., for PFLAG National's annual Love Takes Justice reception. Former Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank made a rare public appearance to celebrate a longtime friend. Congresswoman Maxine Waters received the PFLAG National Champion of Justice Award, joining a lineage that includes John Lewis, Tammy Baldwin, Jared Polis, Nancy Pelosi, and Barbara Lee. AFT President Randi Weingarten was previously honored for work on inclusive education and opposition to book bans. Speakers warned of a darker national climate under the second Trump administration, noting growing fear across families, schools, and statehouses. PFLAG Chair Edith Guffey emphasized the organization’s role to provide support, education, and advocacy for families with LGBTQ+ children.
