Florida driver arrested and accused of trying to run over LGBTQ+ running group
"He seemed aggravated that I was asking him if he was there for the running group. So, he said no. I just stepped away,"
"He got into his car, pulled out, accelerating, pedal to the metal and coming right at me where I was standing,"
"This car is flying at you. I have never seen a car fly that fast right towards me in my entire life."
"When the driver committed and it became clear that this was really happening we saw a lot of our community react like their own family was in danger,"
Authorities arrested 43-year-old Mustafa El Mahmoud after he allegedly attempted to drive his SUV at a queer running group multiple times in West Palm Beach. The group, called the Night Runners, comprises about 40 people who meet twice weekly at a local park. Runner Rudolph Galindo said he asked the man if he was there for the run, that the man appeared aggravated, and then the man accelerated toward the gathered runners. Participants fled into surrounding trees; no one was injured or struck. El Mahmoud faces aggravated assault charges and may face a hate-crime charge.
