Christian teacher wins right to refuse to read gay children's books in school - LGBTQ Nation
"I refused to read a book that had two fathers on the cover and one daughter. I believe that that is not what God designed a marriage to be, and a family to be."
"We've submitted a demand letter demanding that they accommodate Mr. Rivera's religious practices and that they not discriminate."
Eric Rivera, a first-grade teacher at KIPP Antioch College Prep Elementary in Nashville, requested a religious accommodation to avoid reading Stella Brings the Family, a picture book about a girl with two dads. Rivera stated the book conflicted with his Christian beliefs about marriage and family. Initially, administrators approved his request to have an assistant read the book instead. However, Rivera was subsequently called to the principal's office and warned to follow lesson plans with fidelity or face termination. He was then reassigned to different teaching positions. Fearing job loss, Rivera enlisted First Liberty Institute, a far-right religious legal group, to demand the school formally accommodate his religious practices and acknowledge his right to refuse reading the book.
