A 25-year-old man in Uganda was arrested months after the Anti-Homosexuality Act was signed and charged with "aggravated homosexuality" for alleged unlawful sexual intercourse with a 41-year-old man. The law allows the death penalty for certain aggravated cases; prosecutors later amended the charge to "unnatural offenses of having carnal knowledge against the order of nature," which carries life imprisonment. The defendant spent 350 days in prison on remand. Counsel argued that prolonged detention led the man to develop psychosis and schizophrenia. A magistrate discontinued the case after finding the accused of unsound mind and unable to understand the trial process. A written opinion is expected to follow.
