Budapest mayor charged for supporting Pride march
"I was a suspect. Now I'm being accused because I stood up for freedom - my own and of others,"
"Prosecutors are seeking to fine me without a trial for announcing and organizing Budapest Büszkeség,"
"I refuse to be intimidated or silenced,"
"Despite threats or punishment, I will continue to fight. Freedom and love cannot be banned!"
Prosecutors intend to seek a fine against Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony for promoting and organizing Budapest Pride after a law forbade public LGBTQ+ events and the depiction or promotion of homosexuality to minors. Authorities did not specify the fine amount and are not seeking jail time. Prosecutors allege Karácsony invited the public after the law took effect. Budapest's 30th annual Pride last June attracted more than 100,000 attendees and began at City Hall. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán publicly disapproved. Hungary has passed broader anti-LGBTQ legislation that faces challenges in European Union courts. Karácsony has vowed to continue defending freedom and free speech.
