Boots' Miles Heizer says coming out to his family was a 'nightmare'
""I had a very unfortunately classic gay coming-out story. It was a nightmare and everyone was upset. But at the time, I definitely had the old Christian upbringing.""
""I'm lucky my sister, who's my best friend, could not have cared less and was very there for me. My friends around me were super supportive,""
""Things have gotten so much better in that regard with my family over the years.""
Miles Heizer, 31, stars as closeted Marine recruit Cameron Cope in the Netflix series Boots, adapted from Greg Cope's memoir The Pink Marine. The series updates the memoir to just before Don't Ask, Don't Tell, which barred open LGBTQ+ military service. Heizer came out at 19 and described disclosing his sexuality to his super conservative, religious family as an unfortunately classic coming-out story and a nightmare that upset everyone. Heizer says his sister and friends were supportive and that family relationships have improved significantly over the years.
