LGBTQ+ people across the United States have advanced equality through cultural, social, and institutional achievements. A Mexican-American performer from Fresno, Elsie Saldaña performs as "El Daña," celebrates lesbian drag, and continues to perform into her 80s despite rural challenges. Fred W. McDarrah's photography documents mid-to-late 20th-century LGBTQ+ civil-rights moments in New York and reflects creative, safe communities in Greenwich Village. Legends Nightclub in Raleigh has served as a longstanding LGBTQ+ landmark for nearly 40 years, offering a social safe space. Examples include a historian, a church leader, a safe space, a business leader, and a groundbreaking radio broadcast as key contributions.
