"It just, to us, reflects the kind of deeply concerning environment that we're in right now. And the escalating fear of violence,"
Boston police arrested Patrick Fanfan (53), Maurice Payne (37), Woopenson Morisset (30), Gardy Exantus (33), and Franklin Francois (51) and charged them with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon; Fanfan, Payne, and Morisset also face charges of causing serious bodily injury. Civil rights violation charges were not sought, so the attack was not charged as a hate crime. Two victims were walking to a convenience store on Sept. 13 when a group shouted homophobic slurs and someone struck one victim in the back of the head with an object believed to be a baseball bat. The injured victim was found bleeding in a parking lot and taken to Beth Israel Hospital. No updates on the victims' conditions have been released. Many in the community are fearful of escalating violence.
