The Metro D line, or Purple Line, will reopen on Saturday after 70 days of closure for construction beneath Wilshire Boulevard. This first phase, costing $3.7-billion, aims to add three new stations connecting downtown Los Angeles to the Westside, with an expected completion date in 2025. Significant work has been done, including track laying and lighting installation. The second phase will add two additional stations slated to open in 2026, contributing to the project's overall completion before the 2028 Summer Olympics.
"Staff and contractors are now working 24/7 to connect the older portions of the subway with the newest section ... making sure that all power systems, train control, ventilation and signalization all work and function as one common and safe system," Metro Board Chair Fernando Dutra said during a board meeting Thursday.
"We're now at the home stretch to opening this game-changing subway extension project, which is going to be on schedule," Dutra said.
